This work is bigger than
one organization.

Whether you bring lived experience, professional expertise, institutional support, or funding, there is a real role for you in building what Almees is building.

Work with Us

Almees is Canada's first community-led health navigation organization for trans and gender diverse newcomers and refugees. We are built by community, for community. If you want to be part of something that has never existed before in Canada, read below.

Almees currently has the following role openings:

Location: Calgary, Alberta

We are looking for trans and gender diverse newcomers, refugees, migrants or people with lived experience of migration in Alberta to join our navigator team. As a Community Health Navigator, you will provide free, confidential, one-on-one support to trans newcomers navigating the healthcare system. Help participants find a family doctor, access gender-affirming care, understand their health coverage, and get the referrals they need. You bring your lived experience as a trans newcomer in Canada. That experience is your most important qualification.

You must: be trans or gender diverse, have lived experience as a newcomer migrant or refugee in Canada, be based in Alberta, communicate in English, and be available for at least three sessions per month.

You receive: an honorarium for every session completed, full orientation and training, and ongoing support from the Almees team.

We are looking for:
strong written English, attention to detail, community-centered language, and connection to trans, newcomer, or refugee communities. Additional languages, especially Arabic, Somali, Tigrinya, Amharic, or French are a significant asset.

You receive:
an honorarium for your contributions. This is a flexible, remote-friendly role.

To apply: email contact@almees.org with the subject line Content Editor Application - Your Name. Include a brief note about who you are, what languages you work in, and your resume.

Volunteer

Skills the community needs.

Almees is a small organization doing significant work. We welcome volunteers with skills in translation and interpretation, communications and design, community outreach, and event support. All volunteers complete a brief orientation and sign a volunteer agreement.

Lived experience of migration or trans identity is an asset but not required for most volunteer roles.

Build the referral relationship.

Almees works best when it is connected to the organizations and providers already serving trans newcomers. If you are a settlement agency, healthcare provider, mental health organization, or community group working with this population, we want to build a formal referral relationship.

We will brief your team on what Almees offers, provide referral materials in the languages your clients speak, and make sure every warm referral is followed up on.

Fund This Work

Almees is looking for funders who believe lived experience is expertise.

We are a young organization doing work that has never been done in Canada before. Our 2026 programs are partially funded. We are actively seeking grants, foundation support, and individual donations to sustain and expand both pilots.

All funds are managed through our fiscal sponsor, Skipping Stone Foundation (registered Canadian charity). Tax receipts are available for donations. If you are a funder interested in trans health, newcomer health, peer support, or community-led evidence generation we would like to talk to you.
